Michael Adams wins Ruy Lopez Chess Festival

English grandmaster Michael Adams has scored a victory in Ruy Lopez Tournament 2008 in a Spain town of Merida. The peculiarity of the festival was that the players had to choose only a Ruy Lopez opening!

The English grandmaster, who occupies 14th position in FIDE rating, was a clear favorite in this tournament with not-such-a-strong contingent.

Adams confirmed his reputation of an expert of a Ruy Lopez game and passed all along the festival without a loss, however scoring four wins. All in all the leader got 5.5 points out of possible 7.

Meet the champion!

After the end of the 10th Russian Team Championship, which took place in Dagomys, the ahead-of-schedule winner of the championship has been revealed. It is “Ural” from Ekaterinburg, which headed the tournament’s race almost the whole encounter. A draw with “TPS-Saransk” from Saransk was enough for the ahead-of-schedule victory.

One of the pursuers of the leader, “Economist-SGSEU-1” team from Saratov, has lost the game to “FINEK-GazPromBank” from St. Petersburg. Evgeny Alekseev (“Economist-SGSEU-1” – Russia, 2711) playing black on the 1st board has defeated Peter Svidler (“FINEK-GazPromBank” – Russia, 2746). A y...
