On the 1st of March 2009 in spanish Linares supertournament"s 9 tour games had been played. Magnus Karlsen, (2776,Norway) after his defeat Iт 8 tour from Levon Aronian (2750,Armenia ) in the game
with LeInIer Domingues (2717,Cuba) performed with Black sharp variant of sicilian defence that afforded
him together with V.Ivanchuk and L.Aronian with 5 points to stand firmly on the second line of tournament table.

Topalov-Kamsky. Six and sevens games

On the 25 and 26 of February world chess champion’s nomination contenders Veselin
Topalov (2791, Bulgary) and Gata Kamsky (2729, USA) had played sixth and seventh games
of the tournament.

US grand master, who needed a win to equate the score, had begun sixth game with e4 move. Topalov had refused from Spanish beginning, which brought a win for American in the fourth game, choosing a Karo-Kann defence. Having not reached an advantage, Kamsky was forced to end the game with iteration moves draw.

Michael Adams wins Ruy Lopez Chess Festival

English grandmaster Michael Adams has scored a victory in Ruy Lopez Tournament 2008 in a Spain town of Merida. The peculiarity of the festival was that the players had to choose only a Ruy Lopez opening!

The English grandmaster, who occupies 14th position in FIDE rating, was a clear favorite in this tournament with not-such-a-strong contingent.

Adams confirmed his reputation of an expert of a Ruy Lopez game and passed all along the festival without a loss, however scoring four wins. All in all the leader got 5.5 points out of possible 7.

Final Round

The final round of Russian Team Championship took place on April 13th in Dagomys.

The ahead-of-schedule winner of the tournament “Ural” from Ekaterinburg was meeting “FINEK-GazPromBank” from St. Petersburg in the 11th round and the game has ended, as it has in the previous round, in a draw.

“Economist-SGSEU-1” from Saratov has won a narrow victory over “Spasio Swiss” from Moscow. Ernesto Inarkiev (“Spasio-Swiss” — Russia, 2684) on the 4th board has lost to Ni Hua (“Economist-SGSEU-1” — China, 2703).
