“Southern Ural” takes its first team points

Administration, 08 April 2008

The sixth round of Russian Team Championship took place on April 7th in Dagomys.

The loss of tournament’s leading team “Ural” from Ekaterinburg to middling “64” from Moscow caused a sensation. Boris Gelfand on the 1st board (“64” — Israel, 2723), who was fit as a flea during the tournament, has defeated Alexei Shirov (“Ural” — Spain, 2740). International Grand Master Wang Hao (“64” — China, 2684) playing white on the 3rd board, has beaten Alexander Grischuk (“Ural“ — Russia, 2716). Vladimir Malakhov (“Ural” — Russia, 2689) on the 4th board has won over Evgeny Bareev (“64” — Russia, 2677). The game was the most resultative one in the round.

“Economist-SGSEU-1” from Saratov has had a narrow win over Ulan-Ude’s “Shatar-Metropol”. The only effective game in the match was played between Ni Hua (“Economist-SGSEU-1” — China, 2703) and Boris Avrukh (“Shatar-Metropol” — Israel, 2632), in which white have won.

Another pursuer of “Ural” — “FINEK-GazPromBank” from St. Petersburg — passed clear with Moscow “Spasio-Swiss” team. During this competition a young grandmaster David Navara (“FINEK-GazPromBank” — Chech Republic, 2672) on the 3rd board was stronger than Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (“Spasio-Swiss” — Azerbaijan, 2752). On the 4th board Ernesto Inarkiev (“Spasio-Swiss” — Russia, 2684) has beaten Nikita Vitiugov (“FINEK-GazPromBank” — Russia, 2617).

The victory, and therefore first points, for “Southern Ural” from Chelyabinsk was secured by local chess schools alumni, who played on last boards. They are Pavel Ponkratov (“Southern Ural” — Russia, 2499) and Sergei Matsenko (“Southern Ural” — Russia, 2421), who were tougher than International Grand Masters Dmitry Bocharov (“Polytechnik” — Russia, 2569) and Dmitry Kokarev (“Polytechnik” — Russia, 2579) consequently, and in the second game black have won.

In the play between “TPS-Saransk” and “Economist-SGSEU-2” two games were finished resultatively, both for the benefit of Saransk team. On the 3rd board Andrei Volokitin (“TPS-Saransk” — Ukraine, 2684) has beaten Alexei Iljushin (“Economist-SGSEU-2” — Russia, 2552). On the 5rd board Mikhail Kobalia (“TPS-Saransk” — Russia, 2627) has beaten Alexei Kornev (“Economist-SGSEU-2” — Russia, 2544).

The match between “ShSM” from Moscow and “Tomsk-400” from Tomsk was won with a narrow victory by Tomsk team: Alexander Morozevich (“Tomsk-400” — Russia, 2774) has beaten Alexander Onischuk (“ShSM” — USA, 2664).
