To the surprise of specialists the new Dutch Chess Champion is Jan Smeets (2578), who is not even in the first hundred of FIDE male rating. In the last round of the championship Smeets has defeated his more experienced and eminent fellow team member Daniel Stellwagen (2621) in the most fundamental dispute and scored 7.5 points out of 11. Stellwagen and Dimitri Reinderman (2526) both scored 7 points. Stellwagen got silver thanks to additional ratios. The rating favorite 35 y.o. immigrant from Soviet Union Sergey Tiviakov (2634, 85th position in the rating) performed relatively poor and took only 6th place with his six points. It should be noted that the championship had an abbreviated membership because of the absence of two top-rank grandmasters of the country. Due to different reasons Ivan Sokolov (2690, 29th position in FIDE rating) and Loek van Wely (2676, 45th position in FIDE rating) had not taken part in the championship. The tournament was played as a round robin consisting of 11 rounds from April 2nd till 13th. Time control is 2 hours for 40 moves and 55 minutes till the end of the game with additional 5 seconds for a move. Standings and participants’ places: 1. Jan Smeets (2578) — 7.5; 2-3.
